Case Study: MPI PEC Opening Number

Organization

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is the world’s largest association for meeting professionals, with nearly 18,000 members worldwide.

Challenge

Respond to attendee feedback that general sessions are too long by finding creative ways of delivering messages, outside of actual “talking head” speeches.

Solution

  • Carefully consider and weigh each message, as determined using Fusion’s stakeholder analysis tool.
  • Decide which messages need to be delivered by particular speakers, and which could be incorporated into the creative design of the production.
  • Write and produce a custom opening production that, like a song in a Broadway musical, is expository. It gave voice to the unspoken messages that otherwise, because of time constraints, would have been missing from the session content.

Results

The audience’s appreciation for the messages presented in the choreographed number – as well as the mode of delivery – was evident in the standing ovation and word-of-mouth the production received.
